airway management and oxygenation

18 Oct

nice article from September’s Emergency Medicine News, worth a skim:

BRIEF TAKEAWAYS:

  • in one study, surgical airways occured in <1% of RSI intubations (8,937 ED airways) — so reading, practice (e.g. simulations, etc) are key for being ready for these rare events
  • patients with 02 sats <=93% after pre-oxygenation have a high likelihood of desaturation (<90%) during intubation (100% vs 6%, in a study of 87 patients)
