reminder of the day: dexamethasone for pediatric asthma

9 Jan

RAGING HYPOTHETICAL:

Your next patient is a 3 year old asthmatic who is wheezing and has some minor retractions, although smiling and playful on exam and satting well. The nurses have already started some neb treatments, but you’d like to add some steroids to the mix.  If only you could remember the dose…

DEXAMETHASONE FOR PEDIATRIC ASTHMA:

Dose recommended is 0.6 mg/kg X 1 dose of dexamethasone.

Same dose used for croup.

Other smaller doses are used for general anti inflammatory needs.
