isopropyl alcohol (quick review)

7 Mar

commonly used as disinfectant, antifreeze, solvent, rubbing alcohol

CNS inebriant & depressant

fatality is rare

does NOT cause an anion-gap acidosis (as opposed to methanol & ethylene glycol)

primary metabolite is acetone (a ketone)

like ethanol, rapidly absorbed; peak effects ~1-2 hrs s/p ingestion

ethanol competes with the alcohol dehydrogenase metabolism

can be dialyzed

elevated serum osmolal gap (like other alcohols) (calculator)

BOTTOM LINE:

usually a bit drunk and gastritic (that’s got to be a real word, right?)

will usually treat them much like the ethanol patients

not as bad as the methanol/ethylene glycols
