hydration and hydronephrosis

12 Apr

small study with interesting findings:

35 healthy adults, scanned (ultrasound) for hydronephrosis

drank 20mL/kg bottled water (~1.5 L in the avg 70kg person)

hydro seen in:

  • 3 (9%) prior to hydration
  • 24 (67%) 60 min later
  • 20 (57%) 90 min s/p drinking

similar idea in 23 normal volunteers from 1979 (awesome).

if giving possible kidney stoners a bunch of IVF, try to wheel the ultrasound into the room quicker, before too much fluid is on board (since normal people will get some hydro with enough IVF).

(little bit of fluid prior to ultrasound is probably fine)
