ultrasound-guided IVs by ED nurses?

16 May

Small study in JEM, but promising:

Emergency nurses got a 2-hour tutorial from an experienced ED doc

50 patients (29 ultrasound IVs outright, 21 IVs the usual way)

fewer folks in the ultrasound guided IV group needed physician assistance (7/29 vs 11/21)

both groups had similar:

  • mean time to IV placement (~27 min)
  • skin punctures (~ 2)
  • pain score (4.9 vs 5.5 out of 10)

BOTTOM LINE:

overall promising.

ED nurses (already great at IVs) can be trained up in a short time to use the ultrasound

need more data, sure, but this could help free docs up for other patient care activities
