pediatric central line as PIV

7 Oct

quick tip in this month’s EP Monthly, via ALiEM

for the obese patient or otherwise deep ultrasound-guided peripheral IV…

article suggests a pediatric central venous catheter under Seldinger technique. (effectively, a short PICC line)

Nice idea.  I’ve used radial arterial line kits similarly, to have the added benefit of a slightly longer catheter, with a wire to thread over, too.  Most of these are 20g lumens anyways.

OTHER OPTIONS:

I’ve also used a femoral arterial line catheter as a quick single lumen long access catheter.

and there’s always the “peripheral IJ” out there that’s being studied now.

More tools for the toolbox.
