cadaveric capnography?

11 Oct

interesting article covered in a recent Resus.Me post (click through for their post):

QUICK HITS:

two fresh frozen unembalmed cadavers were intubated

both had ETCO2 waveforms for at least 50 sec when hand-ventilated

Not sure what this means yet for peri-code patients, but seems to suggest we should expect SOME sort of ETCO2 waveform even peri-code.

A good question posed in the post comments suggest it could be due to the thawing process; thawing glaciers/etc give off trapped CO2, can thawing patients do the same?

Not definitive by any means, but an interesting thing to puzzle out.
