thoracotomy visualization

for the rare procedure, I try to go through it in my head every so often, so that my brain is ready to go should the need arise.  while it’d never be the same, the exercise is useful, a way to keep myself slightly less terrified about the next time around.

 

Came across this online Gray’s Anatomy database, which includes this picture below:

Think its a good visual aid for what you might be seeing (or feeling for) on the next emergent thoracotomy.  In particular, good to remember the phrenic nerve, so you don’t slice it when you go to open the pericardium.
